The east, the west & Java Dave

In an attempt to escape the 2pm midday sun and armpit-moistening humidity outside, i've confidently strolled through the doors of cafe Java Dave. Should air-conditioning have been absent as the doors opened, i'd already made a cunning plan to survey the room and pretend to not see a pretend friend i was meeting, theatrically glance at my pretend watch i'm not wearing, and leave.

But... air-conditioning is here and so am i, enjoying some tea, wi-fi and dry pits.

I'm not sure if i was served by Java Dave or not, but Dave has a nice hang-out here. While e-mailing tomorrow's couchsurfing host, i stumbled upon the Jeonju-hub city website. One of the pages featured Liu Young, she is the creator of these *signs / cultural observations / pieces of art / designs / drawings. Western society is blue and the wisdom of the east is red, by the way.

These differences are evident everywhere you look, naturally. All the red squares above relate well to Korea, but an overriding factor of Korea is that everything seems to exist solely for function, rather than for aesthetic value, ambiance or the like. This is especially true of Seonyudo Island.

Seonyudo looked like a south-east Asian paradise when i squinted my eyes. I could make out the drastic and beautiful landscape of sand, sea, cliffs, majestic rock formations and the gentle bustle of beach side bars. However, re-focusing showed self-conscious & fully-clothed people on the beach, not a bikini or beach football in sight, brashly-fronted restaurants decorated with glazed men & soju bottles and not a single acoustic guitar or Bob Marley cover could be heard.
